instead of a vertical case setup, lay the case long-ways on its side. then invert the grey front panel so that the oval hole is on the bottom side and place it over the raspberry pie cut out hole (the screen hole) on the other side of the case. also take the 2 black grills and mount them extended outward like wing fins on a tie fighter or something. then make the (former) top exhaust as a rear exhaust with fake fabric flames that flap with the exhaust fan (looking like burning fuel for propulsion at the rear). maybe use a red or blue RGB fan at the rear for good measure

28 dagen geleden

If you swap that top fan with one of the corsair QL ones, it would look cooler with the LED's on both sides of the fan and give you more options for intake/outtake direction without loosing RGB aesthetics. Looking forward to seeing this build finish up.

If not doing custom loop with external radiator I would leave the attached side vent panels asymmetrical at different heights as they are. The empire was symmetrical, but things like the Millennium Falcon were not. Definitely use the rectangular side hole for a display, if not for feeding a custom loop through it, but maybe run some pipes or lines to it (real or fake use). I think a lot of us got attached to the idea of the custom loop, which you could reveal through battle damage in he case.

Someone else may have suggested this and I haven’t seen it but, You should have one or two panels, via styrene, that are a different color from the base/as delivered color. I can envision the Millennium Falcon and other X-wings with dirty brown panels that were obviously rushed patch jobs of whatever spare panels they had. I think those would add a lot of authenticity and offer you a place to feature weathering/rusting/blaster damage/“carbon scoring”.

JayzTwoCents, here's an idea for the engine block. Mix up some epoxy, spray coat that foam engine block. Now you can use some bondo or equivalent filler to fill in and smooth out the foam. This may be sufficient if you're going for a matt finish. If you want gloss, the transitions from bondo will still show, so you'll need a few coats of high build primer, then sand this down.

@JayzTwoCents, you can still do a custom loop, just use those grated panels on top of the radiators. For the panel you're thinking about putting on the front, what if you cut it across the middle, and put a hinge on the top and bottom, then it can open up like a cargo door or something revealing the inside of the case or a reservoir/distro block.

Maand geleden

Jay, I think you can use White Glass Microspheres or Microbubbles with an epoxy to make that block more sand-able and useable.

Cut that front panel in half, then make a patch over the cut to look like a battle repair. Put some big bolts on it, or some weld marks like they go shot up, then repaired damage at a forward base somewhere and just had to get it back into the fight ASAP.

For that front panel, here is my suggestion. use the dremel to cut it in the center in half and make it look like there is a huge gash cut diagonally across the center almost like something flew by and gouged it. Could also have some wires/tubes hanging out of it like some severed coolant lines or something

Simplify the cut for the front piece. Mark your line at whatever angle you would like then cut with a cutoff wheel leaving between 1/8” and 1/4” extra material. Then use spray adhesive to stick down sheets of 80 and 120 grit sand paper to a flat surface. This would allow you to place the cut piece down on the paper and push the piece back and forth to flatten your angle. Since you are probably choosing an arbitrary angle and not matching something exactly, as long as you are close you can use this method to make your cut nice and straight and then smooth the edges with 220 grit.

Maand geleden
Bryan Miller
Bryan Miller

Hey Jay, I think it could look really cool if you left the metal panel it's full height, and designed/3D printed a piece to go on top that tapered from the back of the case up to the height of the metal panel on each side on the top, make it look kinda like the business end of a spaceship engine with a one sided shroud. not sure if one of you or someone you know has the CAD skills to do it, but it would save you having to cut the panel and look really cool if done right

Chop the front panel (the solid panel) over the middle. Overlap the two pieces so they line up top/bottom and rivet it together over the cut. Think that look might go well with this theme. Also if you use a custom loop you could use those side grills as a cover mounted on the radiatior and a flat reservoir of some sort. Excited for 3rd episode :)

Maand geleden
85creations
85creations

Or even an AIO with just the bigger rad on the outside to mount the grill on with the tubes going in in the bottom cut hole. Custom loop for only CPU might be a little overkill either way IMO.

Maand geleden
Leon Kluthausen
Leon Kluthausen

You could still use the custom loop, but have the radiator fans sandwiched between the case and the rad. That way the fans are mostly hidden and you have 2 more wires on the outside for free for greebling, and you still have the radiator look instead of 2 identical radiator panels. It's like you said, the imperial were very organized and had all the parts while the rebels had to make do with what they had and if that was 2 types of radiator instead of 2 of the same they used that. Just an idea :)

With the new grills that you showed in the vid, it looks like you are trying to make it symetrical. I wouldn't do that though. The Millennium Falcon is a classic Star Wars ship and it wasn't symetrical at all. I personally liked the custom loop idea because it wasn't symetrical. I agree that it takes away from your canvas though, but my main point is to not make it look symetrical. Either way, I am sure the build will turn out great. All of the ones that you have done look fantastic, and I look forward to seeing how this one turns out.
